I am currently regional sales manager for the Advanced Intermediates Business Unit. Living in Barcelona, I cover Spain and Portugal. I really enjoy working in sales, not only because I find it exiting to negotiate and close a deal, but also because the sales force plays an indispensible role for the company. Among other tasks, our job consists of identifying customers’ needs and trends and providing this feedback from the market promptly to the organisation. I believe this task really contributes to Evonik’s ability to focus on the customer and be innovative. I joined Evonik back in 1999. I am originally from Argentina, so I started my career at the former Degussa office in Buenos Aires as a sales assistant. I was still a student at the time and was about to complete my business degree. I followed a somewhat indirect road from Argentina to Spain. After about four years at Evonik Argentina, I had the opportunity to take part in a development program targeted at young professionals interested in exciting international marketing and sales careers. I remember that in one of the exercises at the assessment I said that I was applying for the program because "I wanted to become international." And it really happened. That was the defining moment of my career and personal life. The last 10 years with the company had been full of experiences and change. Before moving to Spain, I worked for Evonik in New Jersey, United States, and in Frankfurt (Main), Germany. I am fluent in a new language I was not able to speak in Argentina. I met so many interesting and talented people, and I still do. Because of my work, I travel all around the world. I learned a lot about cultural differences; I discovered that we are all very similar in the final analysis. I had different positions along these years which gave me the chance to work in the Marketing, Product Management, Business Development, and International Sales departments. If you look at it from a product perspective, I moved from exclusive synthesis to construction chemicals, passing through semi-finished products and finally to high volume specialties. At my current job I work from a Home Office, same as most of my colleagues in the European region. We are very well supported by the Evonik Degussa International organization who provides a frame for the sales managers helping us to perform our tasks smoothly. If you asked me what I like the most about Evonik, I would reply that is the variety of opportunities that the company has to offer. Of course, nothing comes for free, and you have to work hard. But if you are flexible, ready to move out from your comfort zone and accept the challenges, the opportunities will just be waiting there for you.
