Nano&Art Competition 2008
One of the aims of the Nano&Art competition supported by Evonik is to allow the general public to experience nanotechnology through art. Contestants artistically render microscopic images from nano research in accordance with a specified theme.
The idea
Evonik has decades of experience in the production of nanostructured materials; we use this knowledge to develop new nanomaterials and creative system solutions. We hope that the Nano&Art competition, held this year for the third time, will make this future-oriented technology better known, present it in all its facets, and allay fearful attitudes toward it. The award specifically targets women students, graduates, and young scientists, and encourages them to consider a career in nanotechnology.
Order and chaos
The number of entries for this year's Nano&Art competition was a record 48, and the theme
was “Order and Chaos.” The top award went to Anja Reckmann, of the physical chemistry department of
the University of Cologne, for her work entitled
Suchbild (“Search Image”), which
apparently shows a swarm of small figures. In reality this is a scanning electron micrograph of a
layer of the aluminum compound aluminum tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) (Alq3).
The second prize was awarded to Kathrin Schultheiss for her
KaNanodinsky, and the third to
Steffi Deiter for Land der
Nanopyramiden (“Land of the Nanopyramids”.
