Evonik Industries Celebrates Topping Out in Shanghai
On July 2, 2008, Evonik Industries celebrated the topping out of the new integrated production facility for methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methacrylate specialties in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP). Dr. Werner Müller, chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Evonik Industries AG, and other members of the Executive Board participated in the ceremony. With the construction of the new production facility, Evonik is continuing to consolidate its position in the Chinese market. The investment of €250 million for the integrated production facility is the second-largest in the history of Evonik's Chemicals Business Area.
Unique integrated production
The world-scale plant, including all of its subunits, should go onstream in late 2009 following
the completion of the two-year period of construction. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in
September 2007. The integrated methacrylate production facility comprises, in addition to an annual
capacity of about 100,000 metric tons of MMA, plants for production of methacrylic acid, butyl
methacrylate, specialty methacrylates, and PMMA molding compounds. Together, these constitute an
optimized network, unique anywhere in the world, for supplying customers in the fields of
opto-electronics, the adhesives and coatings industries, and automotive construction.
In fiscal 2007, about 4,200 employees in the Greater China Region generated sales of about
€750 million.
