Enjoying the sunshine - with no regrets
If your skin is to have pleasant memories of the summer, creams with high sun protection factors
are a must. Evonik uses inorganic UV filters for this purpose: titanium dioxide or zinc oxide,
which combine two important advantages. They reflect sunlight in a number of different directions
so that it cannot penetrate the skin. Additionally, only very small quantities of these UV filters
suffice to provide a high protection factor in the cream. The trend toward sunblocks with a high
sun protection factor is particularly marked in Western Europe, North America, and Japan.
Transparent protection
The TEGO® Sun product line from Evonik is based on further development of products that have been very successfully marketed since the mid-1990s. The new cream components are easily applied and leave no unsightly white film on the skin. This whitening occurs if the UV filter scatters the light instead of absorbing it; the material then appears white to the observer. In TEGO® Sun, on the other hand, a silicon dioxide layer envelops the actual titanium dioxide filter. This layer scatters the light differently, so that the cream appears transparent. The particle size of the powder also plays a role here. The particles are extremely small and the powder is therefore more transparent to light. Because the particles are aggregated and agglomerated, however, they cannot penetrate the skin.
