Evonik and Borussia Dortmund (BVB) are a dream team in Germany's Bundesliga and in the UEFA Champions League. The industrial group from Essen has been supporting the historic Dortmund club with great passion as its main sponsor since the 2007/08 soccer season, when the Evonik brand first came into existence. This is clear to see in the TV spot, Bakery (see below), and in the ads that Evonik regularly publishes for BVB home games: With humor, they show how the fans' passion for their club makes its mark on everyday life. In this sense, the fans are much like Evonik: creative, powerful, and courageous. TV spots and adverts have long achieved cult status among BVB fans. Soccer meets literature. And thus "Reading the Game" was born. Editor Moritz Rinke and other famous novelists, poets, dramatists, and essayists—themselves active soccer players—were invited by Evonik to travel to the Borussia Dortmund soccer team’s home matches during an entire season and followed the team to the cup final before writing about their impressions from widely different perspectives. The commentaries were published in the "Evonik Word Games" column on www.bvb.de only a few days after the relevant match. Supplemented by guest articles written by actor Joachim Król, author Monika Maron, BVB player Sebastian Kehl and Oliver Kirch, as well as an interview with Jürgen Klopp, the anthology contains the special observations of each author.
