Our Loading Station Floats!
Evonik Industries has long worldwide experience in the construction and operation of power plants. In Turkey, we've built one of the most advanced power plants in the country, one that generates more power while consuming less coal—in short, a power plant of the future. In the process, Evonik's engineers quite incidentally came up against a geographical challenge: The power plant lies on a bay too shallow for large coal freighters.
Logistical tour de force
The ingenious solution they devised was the Transshipper, the world's largest floating coal-loading station. Anchored in the bay about two kilometers from the power plant, this is a landmark in the open sea. From a logistical viewpoint, the floating cargo transfer system of Evonik is a masterstroke. Three cranes transfer the coal from the large freighters into small, specially designed barges.
Up in the air with Evonik
The crane operators specialize in loading coal and work at dizzying heights facing the open sea. Carefully, they shovel the black gold from the depths of the enormous freighter. The interval between the departure of one bulk carrier and the arrival of the next is used for repairs and maintenance of the Transshipper. And for off-duty periods, there are galleys, cabins, and recreation rooms, just as on a regular ship.
