Systematic approach to lightweight design: Evonik at AEE

Essen, May 23, 2017
  • Evonik’s confident claim at Automotive Engineering Expo (AEE): “Innovate mobility – we provide the chemistry”
  • Lightweight design: New manufacturing process for the serial production of composite materials
  • New joint venture to boost the commitment to the development of composite solutions

The automotive sector is one of the core markets of Evonik Industries. The specialty chemicals company offers numerous solutions for the vehicle structure, exterior body parts, interior and exterior design, chassis, and the powertrain. This engagement is reflected in Evonik's confident claim for the industry: “Innovate mobility – we provide the chemistry”. “Our competencies in automotive lightweight design include application options for high-performance polymers and hardeners, e.g. to replace metals close to the engine, various composite solutions, hybrids made of metal-plastic compounds, or the various pipe systems made of specialized polymers, which replace piping made of metal or rubber,” says Dr. Oliver Eyrisch, the head of the Evonik for Automotive Team. “We also focus on the optimization of production processes of our customers.” Visitors will be able to experience the company’s product range and options for using chemicals in modern automotive design first-hand at this year’s Automotive Engineering Expo (AEE), held in Nuremberg from
May 30-31.

The keyword is lightweight design, as the automotive industry considers composite materials to reduce vehicle weight and CO2 emissions. This trend is currently limited to the premium sector since the applied production methods have been expensive and time-consuming so far. The newly developed PulPress process of Evonik is changing that: it enables the serial production of complex components at a competitive price for mass production. The new production process particularly stands out for its freedom of design, cost efficiency, and the crash behavior of the resulting composite components, which are also 75 percent lighter than conventional steel structures. Compared to composite materials made with established procedures, the PulPress process offers cost savings of up to sixty percent.

The new joint venture VESTARO, established by Evonik and Forward Engineering, also focuses on lightweight design in the automotive industry. It was founded to implement composite solutions for mass industrial production of fiber composite parts. Intended to further advance the partnership with automotive manufacturers, VESTARO brings together expertise in specialty chemicals and engineering to support lightweight design developments with custom-tailored composite matrix systems.

These and other Evonik products for lightweight design and further automotive applications will be on display in Hall 12, Stand 419 at AEE. For further information, visit www.evonik.com/automotive. The Evonik for Automotive Team pools the efforts to target the automotive market and promotes the performance of the Group in the four innovation fields of weight, efficiency, surfaces, and lighting.
