Innovations in energy-efficient refurbishment of old buildings have been attracting more attention than ever before. That the Plus Energy standard can also be applied to existing structures is no longer just a utopian vision, as has been exemplified by the most recent research results of the German Federal Working Group for Refurbishing Old Buildings and the current competition results such as the Praxis Altbau Prize for Product Innovations. The promoters, the BAKA (Bundesarbeitskreis Altbauerneuerung e.V.), Berlin, the Messe München (Munich’s premier exhibition venue), and the Gütersloh Bauverlag, a construction publisher, staged the competition in the spirit of “Investing in the future.” Evonik Industries AG earned an award for its product innovation CALOSTAT®. The Inorganic Materials Business Unit introduced to the jurors the new High Performance Thermal Insulation Panels, which consist primarily of silicon dioxide. With this highly efficient insulating material, Evonik is paving an entirely new path for the construction industry. Because of its construction-based physical features, CALOSTAT® serves as a thermal upgrade for many existing construction materials. "We’re proud and pleased that CALOSTAT® has been ushering the return to more streamlined construction methods," says a pleased Dr. Hark-Oluf Asbahr, director of Thermal Insulation, who accepted the prize on behalf of Evonik. "Especially in the refurbishment of old structures," he explained, "do we find an enormous breadth of façade types that lend themselves to this thermal post-treatment. This can be done to multistory office and administration buildings, monuments, industrial structures, and apartment buildings, too. We’re happy to talk to interested manufacturers who would like to have greater freedom of design, more room, and more energy for existing structures." CALOSTAT® fits the bill for forward-looking projects 100 percent Of the 56 ideas that were submitted for new products for old and new buildings, 9 innovations earned awards. Under the auspices of the Federal Minister for Transportation, Construction, and Urban Development, Dr. Peter Ramsauer was conferred the innovation award on the occasion of the International Construction Expo BAU 2013 in Munich, right on the opening date: January 14, 2013. That CALOSTAT® fits the bill for forward-looking projects was something that even the jury was unanimous about, so they conferred a prize to Evonik. State Secretary Rainer Bomba (Federal Ministry of Transportation, Construction, and Urban Development), Dr. Pfeiffer (Messe München) and Ulrich Zink (chairman of the BAKA) handed the certificate to Evonik. Top-notch superinsulation at the BAU 2013 CALOSTAT® shows clearly the flexibility of refurbishing already existing wall systems. Building exteriors are improvable either outside or inside. The construction products currently realized and examples of reference properties for filling front and back brick walls, not to mentiom mineral insulation panels, insulation in a composite element made of PLEXIGLAS® Mineral, and façade insulation for double walls with an air space between them, are a testimony to a wealth of applications ideas. That’s what Evonik will be showing at its booth. The CALOSTAT® exhibits can still be viewed until January 19, 2013, in Hall B O (Construction on Existing Structures Marketplace) and in Evonik’s tradeshow stand in Hall A1, Booth 415. Further information is available on the manufacturer’s homepage at www.calostat.de.
