Shanghai Research & Development Center Expanded
The year 2008 marks the 30th anniversary of China's market liberalization, which is the basis
for the country's current economic boom. Developing the Chinese market is of key importance for the
growth strategy of Evonik.
To live up to the company's claim of being a creative industrial group, Evonik must develop
new ways to face the challenges of tomorrow with the knowledge that is available today. For this
purpose, Evonik established a research and development center in Shanghai in 2004. In 2007, the
center was extended and is now one of the largest research centers in Shanghai. On an area covering
25,000 square meters, it is home to leading edge laboratories for research, development, applied
technology, and technical customer service, as well as a test facility for polymer technology.
The expansion of the center has improved our position, allowing us to participate more in the
highly attractive Chinese market and underlining the commitment of Evonik in China. As a service
platform, it services the entire Asia-Pacific region. This strengthens our customer relationships
and creates added value for our customers through innovative solutions.
Research and development are elementary components of the sustainable growth strategy of
Evonik. Continuous self-renewal and expansion of our portfolio to include innovative products is of
key importance to Evonik. About 20 percent of our chemicals sales are based on products and
applications that are less than five years old.
Because our research and development is based on the idea of sustainability, this also has a
positive effect for the environment. For example, considering the growing motorization in Asian
societies, Evonik develops innovative products for the automotive industry and thus makes a
contribution towards creating a "Green Asia."
