Housing for All Generations

The classic extended family living under a single roof has become a rarity. And yet, an increasing number of people are now coming to recognize the advantages of several generations living together. As a pioneer in future-oriented living space, Evonik Industries is developing in Essen a residential concept supporting this trend.

Old transformed to new, for young and old

In the popular district of Old Essen, we’re converting a neighborhood from 1942 into a modern multigenerational housing area. This will be a lively mix, meeting all kinds of residential needs: Families with children, couples, singles, and seniors will all find here housing appropriate to their requirements. By 2011, Evonik plans to have improved the apartments in the neighborhood and built 90 new rented apartments, many of which will be barrier-free. These apartments are easily accessible or can be reached using an elevator. Eleven comfortable homes for private ownership will also be offered.

All together, and freedom for all

Whether in a rented or privately owned home, everyone lives here within his or her own four walls and at the same time in association with other people of different generations—a new form of neighborliness and social bonding that many have come to value. Many people want to enjoy the benefits of a community in which several people live under a single roof and are able—but not compelled—to come together at any time. This form of living offers both companionship and privacy while, most importantly, keeping loneliness at bay.

Accommodation with a personal touch

The architecture of the Bausemshorst neighborhood in Essen reflects this idea. There is a common room for get-togethers and, for each ground floor apartment, also a spacious patio that the occupants can use as an additional balcony. The interior of the property will have a garden with a children’s playground and quiet zones. Evonik also plans to provide a rose garden, a beach volleyball court, and a barbecue area.

Relaxed and practical living

Outside the multigenerational estate, the attractiveness of the surroundings, always an important consideration in our projects, is very much in evidence: The residential area, with large, open spaces and recreational facilities, is quiet and peaceful, and yet close to the Old Essen city center. With a range of shopping options, medical facilities, and easy light-rail access, the infrastructure is ideal for all needs.

Creating a common living space

Life and work, shopping, leisure, culture, living together, and growing old gracefully—these factors are now closely linked to one another. Multigenerational living is in this context an important element in the development of a modern city and residential district, and an indicator of things to come. This is why Evonik is creating living spaces for a community based on mutuality and living spaces that positively reinforce current social trends by linking the generations.
