Marl Chemical Park

The Marl Chemical Park is one of the largest chemical sites in Germany and also Evonik’s largest production location. The site covers an area of more than six square kilometers and provides around 10,000 jobs.

In addition to Evonik, its subsidiaries, and its affiliates, 17 other companies have operations in the Chemical Park. The roughly 100 production plants are linked in a tightly integrated material and energy network and are, for the most part, operated around the clock. Every year, over four million metric tons of products start their journey here on their way to destinations throughout the world. The energy requirements of the Marl Chemical Park are met by generating electricity and steam (combined heat and power) at two on-site gas-fired power plants and one on-site coal-fired plant.

The production focus in Marl Chemical Park is on the conversion of petrochemical raw materials such as benzene, ethylene, propylene, methanol and phenol into basic, fine and specialty chemicals—from C4 crack into derived products, from chlorine electrolysis into PVC, from acetylene into tetrahydrofuran, from fatty alcohols and ethylene oxide into surfactants, and from acrylic acid into butyl acrylate, to name but a few.

We encounter all these products in various areas of our daily lives. Whether it’s wallpaper or paint, shampoo or hygiene products, latex mattresses or pharmaceuticals, components for the automotive sector and fuel additives, or insulating materials for the construction industry—the range of products is diverse. Yogurt and margarine also rely on these powerful chemicals, as do many sporting goods.
