Mankind is consuming natural resources faster than the ecosystem is able to regenerate them. On July 29, human consumption of renewable resources will have overshot the earth’s supply and capacity to reproduce these resources for the current year.
The research organization Global Footprint Network has been calculating the exact date of the Earth Overshoot Day every year since the 1970s.
“There is no alternative planet for us, which is why every day we work to come up with solutions that make a verifiable improvement to resource efficiency and decrease the ecological footprint,” says Claus Rettig, head of Evonik’s Resource Efficiency segment. “On the way to becoming the world’s best specialty chemicals company it is important to us to bring together economic success with environmental and social responsibility. Together with our partners and customers, we aim to find new, sustainable solutions and in doing so keep postponing Earth Overshoot Day.”
