The Mobile City

The city of the future will be quieter, cleaner, and safer. And environmentally sound mobility concepts will help make that happen—with solutions from Evonik.

Bus, rail, car, e-bike: the future of mobility is low-noise, green, compact, and multimodal. Engineers have a number of levers they can pull to reduce the fuel and energy consumption of our vehicles: lower vehicle weight, improved aerodynamics, and more efficient motors and drivetrains. And now Evonik is placing another tool at their disposal: DRIVON™ technology can cut a car’s fuel consumption by 3 to 4 percent, and some of the most valuable assets in the DRIVON™ technology toolbox are VISCOPLEX® comb polymers. These carefully designed molecules greatly improve the viscosity temperature relationship of the lubricant formulations used in drivetrain systems. The reduction of friction gives machine components the best optimal wear protection while a lower fuel consumption translates to reduction of CO2 emissions.

The strengths of AEROXIDE®, a line of pyrogenic metal oxides, come into play in the field of electromobility, where they improve the safety, performance and service life of lithium ion batteries. When used as a ceramic coating, for instance, these metal oxides improve the thermal stability and mechanical properties of battery separators, making the materials an important building block of electromobility. Furthermore, as a particle coating on cathode materials, it enables the use of new, more energy-rich cathodes and thus contributes to increasing the range of the electric car of the future.

Composite and hybrid materials are the tool of choice for any application requiring weight reduction and durability, and Evonik products are being used here more and more often. Examples include VESTALITE® for high-performance composite components based on epoxy or polyurethane polymers, and ROHACELL® structural foam for use as the core material for fiber-plastic composites. Because they can be used for replacing heavy metal components in vehicles, these materials serve as an important tool for greater resource efficiency and emissions control.

VESTAMIN®, an amine curing agent, can be used for constructing pressure tanks for cars with natural-gas drives. This makes it the perfect blend of lightweight construction concepts (no more steel flasks or tanks) and the trend toward alternative drive systems like natural gas engines, which are more CO2 efficient.
