World Habitat Day, held on the first Monday of October each year, and World Cities Day on the last day of October draw attention to the condition of cities.
“The two action days, initiated by the United Nations, remind us that we all have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of our cities,” says Claus Rettig, head of Evonik’s Resource Efficiency segment. “With our innovations, we’re already contributing toward linking good infrastructure, resource conservation, and a high quality of life.”
This is made possible by, for example, building protection agents from Evonik. Deep impregnation by silanes prevents water and the substances dissolved in it from penetrating into the building fabric and damaging it. The idea of giving self-healing properties to concrete goes even further: In the Wallcraft project, the company is developing a product additive that extends the life of concrete by allowing triggered sealing of cracks.
Already, more people are living in cities than in rural areas; in the year 2050 three quarters of the world population will be living in an urban environment. The world is therefore experiencing the largest growth wave of urban development in history.
In a collection of articles, the company gives many other examples of how Evonik products contribute toward making life in the city more comfortable, safe, and sustainable.
