At this year’s Intertraffic in Amsterdam (Netherlands) from March 25 to 28, Evonik Industries presents innovative products for the road marking sector. The company is one of the major internationally active solution providers in the specialty chemicals market. "Road marking systems are one of our growth markets. Creative ideas are required in this area on account of increasing traffic volumes and ever-more stringent environmental requirements," says Jochen Henkels, Business Director Road Marking & Construction at Evonik. The creative industrial group offers its international customers tailor-made solutions to their problems and focuses on sustainable products for a wide range of climatic and safety-related requirements.
Proven in practice: Markings with DEAGROUTE® increase traffic safety
Thanks to their ability to reduce the risk of accidents, road and area markings based on the reactive resin DEGAROUTE® produced by Evonik have been making a considerable contribution to traffic safety for over 50 years now. Take an example: the German federal highway B521 nearby Frankfurt once had one of the highest rates of accidents. In 2002 alone, there were 19 accidents in which cars came off the road at a point where there was a narrow, poorly signposted bend. Hessen Mobil, the road construction department and agency responsible for this stretch of road, decided to address the situation. "We simply had to change something at this danger spot," said Norbert Viehmann of the Bruchköbel road maintenance depot.
The road maintenance depot replaced the road markings with DEGAROUTE®, changed the traffic signs and reduced the speed limit. "We decided to try something new, and tried out a cold plastic marking with an agglomerate structure based on DEGAROUTE®," explained Viehmann. The results are impressive: three years after the new road marking was applied, this stretch of road is no longer an accident black spot. "Using road marking with DEGAROUTE® is without a doubt worthwhile. Even in rain, the marking is clearly visible and drivers can hear a distinct noise as soon as they leave the lane. Furthermore, this high-quality material simply lasts much longer," explains Viehmann.
Good for road users, good for the environment
Not only do road markings with DEGAROUTE® help to prevent accidents, they also have an outstanding ecological footprint. In particular, the durability of a road marking is crucial to environmental effects such as the CO2 footprint. In 2011, a so-called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) research was conducted into the various road marking systems: thermoplastic, cold plastic, solvent-based paint, and water-based paint. The cold plastic-based DEGAROUTE® paint was the clear winner in the study. The high durability of the road marking is due to the special formulation of DEGAROUTE® reactive resin. This means that thanks to its long service life, not only is the cold plastic based DEGAROUTE® an environmentally friendly solution, it also saves drivers from experiencing inconvenient road works. In addition, its excellent environmental impact also brings economic benefits: as a result of the high wear resistance of the cold plastic, it is possible to make considerable savings on maintenance costs over a period of 10 years. This is proven by the Life Cycle Costing (LCC), which examined the lifecycle of DEGAROUTE® for economic sustainability in addition to the ecological aspects.
DEGAROUTE®: Greater safety in road traffic around the world
To keep its finger on the pulse of research, Evonik collaborates closely with strategic partners across the world. Employees are working together to study the long-term needs of end customers and are developing new technologies and solutions. "Our customers in North America, for instance, are being confronted with very different challenges to those faced by our customers in Asia," explains Jochen Henkels of Evonik. "To address this issue, we are in close contact with all segments of the value chain so that we can offer our customers precisely the solutions they need." In regions where winters are harsh, for example, DEGAROUTE® therefore offers structures that can also withstand snowplows, while in regions with a lot of rain such as Brazil or China, drainage affects are the primary focus. Evonik will be presenting these solutions with the slogan "DEGAROUTE® around the world" at Intertraffic, and will be holding a wide range of seminars at its stand.
