Evonik to Collaborate with EL-Technologie GmbH
Evonik Industries AG and EL-Technologie GmbH recently concluded a cooperation agreement to jointly develop the pastes used in electroluminescent (EL) lamps. Evonik is thus entering into the production and marketing of EL pastes for film substrates, glass, and other materials. EL-Technologie will contribute the system and equipment expertise required for electroluminescent systems as well as the formulation expertise for the pastes. The collaboration with EL-Technologie is expected to facilitate Evonik’s access to the EL lamp market segment. EL-Technologie intends to use the collaboration to extend its customer base for application support and service for end-product implementation.
“For our Nanotronics S2B Center, this collaboration is another important milestone on the way to entering the printed electronics market,” says Dr. Alfred Oberholz, member of the Executive Board of Evonik Industries with responsibility for research in the Chemicals Business Area.
EL lamps are thin, flexible illuminants that emit light when an AC voltage is applied; the light layer responsible for this effect is produced in a printing process with special pastes. The lamps provide extremely uniform and contoured light; their low recess depth and flexibility are additional plus points. They are used in event and stage technology, in the safety sector, for decorative purposes, and in the automotive industry. For example, they provide backlighting for displays in cars, cell phones, and measuring equipment.
EL-Technologie is engaged in the development, prototyping, and production of electroluminescent systems. One area of focus is the development of pastes, for which EL-Technologie works in close collaboration with well-known producers of screen printing pastes and companies in the coating chemicals and films sectors. The pastes developed by EL-Technologie are stable dispersions with little tendency to settle. They adhere very well to a wide range of substrates, provide high light output, are easily processed, and dry at low temperatures. Due to the uniformly high quality of its pastes and its packaging and applications expertise, coupled with a profound knowledge of the market, EL-Technologie is now a sought-after partner for a large number of companies.
