Chemicals Management System Plus

Ensuring the safe use of all chemicals, in particular of "Hazardous Chemicals of High Concern" (hChC) is a prerequisite of Product Stewardship at Evonik.

For Evonik, Product Stewardship does not only mean hazard and risk assessment, classification and labelling, toxicological and eco-toxicological testing in the context of regulatory compliance. Therefore Evonik has introduced its "Chemicals Management System (CMS)" in 2001 which comprises Product Stewardship activities going beyond legal requirements.

In order to further improve the risk management and the performance of a product in the fields of health, safety and the environment during its entire life cycle, Evonik extends the scope of its Chemicals Management System by actively tackling the following challenges (CMSPLUS):

  • Use of purchased raw materials with reduced levels of hChC (Reduction)
  • Improvement of our manufacturing processes in order to minimize or eliminate the undesired presence of hChC in our products (Lowering Toxicity)
  • Reduction of the exposure of man and environment to hChC by rigorous risk management measures, e.g. best application form, (strict) containment, training of personnel and customers, use restrictions etc. (Risk Management)
  • Foster the research and development of alternatives for hChC (Substitution)

Evonik defines "hazardous chemicals of high concern" (hChC) as:
  • CMR (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, Reprotoxic), Cat 1A and 1B according to UN GHS
  • PBT (Persistent, Bioaccumulative, Toxic) according to Annex XIII of REACH
  • vPvB (very Persistent, very Bioaccumulative) according to Annex XIII of REACH
  • Serious adverse effects on human health or environment on a case-by-case-basis, by clear science-based criteria.
